ARTIST STATEMENT
Avery Givens Nardone is an artist based in Philadelphia whose practice delves into personal reflections of the world around her. She primarily works in abstraction but also often incorporates text into her work to explore ideas around language, identity, and history. Her work is deeply personal and strives to honor the powerful subtleties of life. By pushing the boundaries between painting and sculpture, she seeks to create a multi-sensorial experience for her audience. Through her art, Avery seeks to dissect and explore themes of personal identity and expression.
When dealing with the figure, distortion and pushing the extremes of a pose allows Avery to communicate her discomfort with her own body. These pieces are essentially representative disassociations, letting her leave the experience of the physical body elsewhere. Alternatively, working with abstraction examines the flow and motion involved in feelings, thoughts, and, most importantly, impulses. Focusing on the impulse rather than overthinking allows for more access of her lived experience, giving opportunities for reflection.
